Flower Power

Photo Tölkin Palautus
Extracted from... People in Helsinki were invited to help create a massive art installation of flowers under the supervision of artist Kaisa Salmi. On Monday, in the pouring rain, Salmi and a band of Helsinki volunteers set up a labyrinth of 100,000 gerberas in front of the main railway station. The gerbera labyrinth will be on display until Friday. Nature, particularly flowers, are a recurring theme in Salmi's works. The aim of this installation is to show how important nature is to humans' surroundings and welfare. In 2007, foto below, Salmi recruited helpers to cover the steps of Parliament with 60,000 blooms.

Mental Finland is a theatre play about Europe in 2069. A dark comedy that looks fun and interesting. The aesthetics remind me of the Leningrad cowboys. We have to wait to see it in Helsinki till next September

Miina Äkkijyrkkä

Photos Juha Metso
Miina Äkkijyrkkä is a Finnish sculptor sorrounded by controversy. Her main source of inspiration is cattle and she's commited with the protection of Finnish breeds. Recently the city of Helsinki has cancelled her rental contract and is forcing her to leave her farm. The oficial motive are accusations of not taking proper care of the cattle. However, many people see this as a way to get rid off a person with an unusual way of living that doesn't conform to the standards of city development (i.e. favouring golf courts and speculative housing). Äkkijyrkkä's work (cows made out car parts) can be seen in many places around the city and she's also made some prints for Marimekko. If she leaves, Helsinki is going to loose an inspirational character with the courage to show that other life styles are possible in our globalised cities. Don't miss her website and enjoy her work
Art goes kapakka

Top chefs look for the best Finnish ingredient, offering traditional delicacies and presenting local producers. Restaurants also offer their so called 'legendary dishes'. Really interesting is the activity science is art, which consists in giving talks at Vanha about health, happiness, environmental issues... Plus plenty of art exhibitions in bars. Needless to say that, during the events, the participating bars provide the usual goods to keep clients happy.
