Recipes for disaster

I warmly recommend the documentary Recipes for disaster. Finnish director John Webster (yes, he's a Finn) convinces his wife that the whole family should go on an oil diet, yet without having to give up their a middle class suburban lifestyle in Espoo. All the everyday things that we don't do, or that we can't help doing, make up recipes for disaster. In this comedy of errors they find themselves questioning their values and putting to test their will power and ultimately, their happiness. Trailer below

Albóndigues - Lihapullia

Few days ago appeared in the newspaper a review of the best meatballs in Helsinki. I quite like the ones served at Tori restaurant (these in the photo), which come with a delicious sauce made out of a reduction of Jallu (the Finnish "brandy"). Btw, don't miss Jallu's ad below. Eating these metballs we celebrated the promotion of Xixón's football team to the top Spanish league. Sonia & Aurora also had some during their last visit. Now you have another reason to visit ;)
PS: " Jaloviina on kyl' aikamoista keittoo..." the guy playing chess says when turning green (Jaloviina=Jallu is such a terrific 'soup')

En Finlandia les albóndigues tiren mucho. Hai poco salió una llista nel periódicu colos restaurantes coles meyores albóndigues. A mí gustenme especialmente les del restaurante Tori (na foto) que vienen con una salsa brutal fecha duna reducción de Jallu (el "coñá" Finés). Nun vos perder l'anunciu de Jallu embaxo. Comiéndoles celebré l'ascensu del Sporting y Sonia & Aurora también les probaron na su última visita. Yá teneis otru motivu más pa visitanos ;)

OpenHouseHelsinki is an event, which unconfines spaces normally restricted to public. There are guided tours into interesting buildings, interiors, landmarks and old and more recent architectural destinations. The tours are free of charge and powered by architects and other experts. I'll try to visit the 'Bunkkeri'

Helsinki film festival

Now that the Helsinki film festival is over I take the chance to show some photos of my favourite cinema theatre in Helsinki: Bio Rex. I love the 'ufo-like' lamps, the massive concrete walls and functionalist style. As usual nice photos in Flickr

At the end we didn't see many movies due to schedule and lack of ticket availability. I saw for the third time Myazaki's Nausicäa (I wouldn't mind a fourth), Lemon tree (quite nice), Eagle vs. Shark (funny but I expected more) and Helvetica (very entertaining documentary about typefaces, highly recommended even if you're not a graphic designer)
Al final nun fuimos a ver muches pelis por problemes d'horarios y entres agotaes. Vimos (yo por tercera vez) Nausicäa de Miyazaki, Lemon tree (muy chula), Eagle vs. Shark (divertida pero esperaba más) y Helvetica (documental sobre tipografía, muy recomendable incluso pa non diseñadores gráficos)

We dried this ones, the yellow chantarelles and the hedgehog mushrooms went straight to the pan

Cantabrian Maginot

During our hiking trip in the forest of Peloño we passed by this machine-gun nest from the Spanish civil war. These remains from the war are abundant in the Asturian mountains. Some even named this line of fortifications against the fascists the "Cantabrian Maginot Line", taking the name from the original Maginot Line built before WWII in France to defend against the Germans. Ciclo Folc de Cámara Ígor Medio

The chamber concerts of Asturian folk which take place yearly in Xixón are named from now on after our friend Ígor. He was organising these concerts and his commitment and usual contagious optimism resulted in the formation/consolidation of some of the most interesting groups in the Asturian folk scene (i.e. Tuenda). Below a video of Ígor Medio and Lisardo Prieto playing the song Ribeseya.

Atom Ant

To my surprise, during our last trip to Asturies very few people remembered the Atom Ant. Now everyone can refresh their memories and understand why I cannot tell the difference between the Atom Ant and him

Asturies is a cider country. We pour the cider as shown in the photo and explained here. There are even pouring contests, where the participants get points for the style, precision and time spent on pouring one bottle

You have 60 seconds to pour the bottle and get five glasses, which should have 12 cl of cider each

Every year the city council of Xixón arranges a gathering on the beach to break the Guiness record of "number of people throwing sider simultaneously". It's fun but I guess there is not much competence elsewhere in the world :)

Harissa

Sonia gave us some Moroccan Harissa spice mixes to bring to Helsinki. Although Harissa is generally served served with couscous we tried the 'Canarian Way' or with 'papas arrugadas'. We boiled some delicious Finnish potatoes (they are really amazing potatoes!) with a huge amount of salt until they get wrinkled, then you just eat them with a paste made with the spices and good olive oil. The green one is a 'mojo verde' I've prepared. Wonderful!
Sonia dionos un par de bolses con Harissa (picante y suave) que traxo de Marruecos. Aunque la Harissa usase p'acompañar el couscous, nós decidimos probar en plan 'papas arrugadas con mojo'. Preparamos unes patates Fineses, que son la bomba, manteca pura, y les comimos coles Harisses y un mojo verde que me curré. Un ésito!

Sporting Xixón 2 - A.C. Milan 0

We also went to watch the friendly game between my football team (Sporting de "Gijón") against A.C. Milan. It was great fun and surprising result (2-0). We have to enjoy this year, while Sporting is at the very first division of "La Liga" after promoting last year
